Special Films Collection: Travel films, 1952-1985.

Travel films recording people, places, and objects were made by laymen of whatever seemed interesting, unusual, or exotic. Several films were made by Guernee and Betty Dyer depicting their travels to Africa, Central America, the Middle East, and India. The Dyers' film of Guatemala emphasizes Christian-pagan mixture of religion. A film about Ethiopia focuses on church festivals. A film made by Gardner Stout, former American Museum of Natural History president, and his wife shows fauna of Kenya. Other travel films portray Mali and big game fishing off the coast of Peru.

Gardner S. Stout was a banker and amateur ornithologist who was a trustee, 1959-1964, and president, 1968-1975, of the American Museum of Natural History. Stout worked as an investment banker until his retirement in 1968, when he took the unpaid post of AMNH president. He also served as secretary (1964-1967), and vice president (1967-1968), and was a field associate in ornithology.
